Time Studio
In my first year in VCU's art program, I took Time Studio. I produced time-based work including video art, audio art, and performance art.
"In Vanity"
October 2024
Video/performance art
3 minutes 26 seconds
Following the theme of “dis/embody” I portray the process of one’s self-perception shaping their ego. This narrative come in three parts:
I. One attempts to beautify their image;
II. The line between self-perception and the true self wears thin;
III. One’s self becomes consumed by self-perception. Meaning, IRREALITY.
Warning: this video contains rapidly flashing lights."In Vanity" (Spukhaus version)
October 2024
Video/performance art
40 seconds
The video above is the edited version of my video/performance art piece "In Vanity" exhibited at Spukhaus in the Anderson. Because my video clip was exhibited among the work of others, my aim was to grab the passing audience's attention with this brief clip. For this shortened version, I incorporated flashing, dramatizing the process of losing oneself to obsession with self-perception. The music and audio is also spliced differently than the original; I still wanted the audience to comprehend the descent to delusion and therefore exposed sounds at different times within a shorter timespan.
"Twin Telepathy"
December 2024
Live recording of performance art
2 minutes 56 seconds
For our final assignment, we created performance art involving additional audiovisual elements. My partner was Corey Ricks and we chose to involve the audience with our piece. Corey and I wanted to combine this idea of a universal human connection with the role social media plays in our lives. The format of the performance follows the “twin telepathy” trend online; because we don’t rehearse our responses and don’t know what prompt will be chosen, the performance’s ephemerality is enhanced as is the theme of dis/connection with one’s surroundings or fellow people. The arc created by the performance is one where—depending on random circumstances and actions—we either act similarly to each other or don’t, we can either recognize our common circumstances or not.
"Don't Say Thank You"
September 2024
5 minutes 14 seconds
The audio accompanying this video sounds best when using headphones. Captions have been provided for clarity.The process shooting this involved a storyboard at first, then the blocking of the actors on set, I also created a series of audio cues delivered via headphones so the actors could deliver their lines.
"Untitled" (Self-portrait)
September 2024
Video art
1 minute 3 seconds
The prompt given was to take and compose 125 different images in sequence. The assignment was to create a self-portrait without our face and without audio. My interpretation is a narrative about how I overcome change. While familiar patterns have helped manufacture my identity and experience, elements that don’t fit into those shapes still have a place in my life as I grow.
"Soundscape of Bogdantsi in Summertime"
November 2024
Audio art
1 minute 13 seconds
The prompt for this piece was to compose at least twenty sounds we had recorded in order to evoke a memory. Our memories of when, where, and what are implicitly linked to a “silent-but-not-silent” backdrop of ambient noise. My memory takes place in Bogdantsi, my family’s village in Bulgaria, and involves a Bulgarian lullaby. You can hear the sleepy village transition from nighttime to day.
